Our First Impression – of Yellow Spot 12
If you haven’t had an opportunity to try this delicious Irish Whiskey yet, then I …STRONGLY… encourage you to do so! This little beauty I came across in the LCBO, last year right before Christmas, and decided to buy it as a gift for my father-in-law. Needless to day, after an evening of family festivities, there wasn’t hardly a drop left in the bottle by the time we were late into the evening. So, to say I think I found a “hidden gem” would be an understatement with this bottle.
About This Whiskey
Yellow Spot 12 is a single pot still Irish Whiskey, aged 12 years, and is part of a family of “spot” whiskies originally produced by Mitchell and Son in Dublin.
“The Mitchells matured their whiskey in casks under the streets of Dublin in their network of underground cellars. When their fortified wine casks were filled exclusively with Jameson spirit from the old Bow St. Distillery, they were marked with a daub or ‘spot’ of paint which identified how long the barrels would be matured for. Blue for 7 years, Green for 10 years, Yellow for 12 years and Red for 15 years—hence the name Spot Whiskey.”
Golden Amber – Caramel Like
On The Nose
This whiskey is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, and ex-malaga (a sweet Spanish fortified wine) casks. This gives Yellow Spot 12 a really nice butterscotch, caramel sweet smell. There’s also a hint of vanilla, which becomes more apparent as you breathe deeply from the glass.
On The Palate
The longer you let it warm in your mouth, you’ll find that there’s an interesting mix of sweet and spicy flavours, which seems to get warmer and warmer the longer you let it sit. As you swallow this magnificent dram there is just a slight burn in the throat, that quickly goes away and leaves you with that “warm & fuzzy” feeling.
Let’s just say, this is definitely smooth!
To be honest, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, so I absolutely LOVE the butterscotch flavour on this! It’s a medium-long finish, that changes flavour as it goes, and leaves you wanting more.
Alcohol By Volume (ABV)
If you’ve never had the opportunity to try an Irish Whiskey before, THIS is a FABULOUS one to start with. It’s got a creamy texture, wonderful nose, and a very pleasant finish that will have you topping up your glass more times than you can count. Trust me, I lost count at 4… lol.
This is DEFINITELY one to have in your collection, and I can’t wait to try the “Red Spot 15 Year”, when I can find one.
